Earth Hour: The Fight Against Global Warming!

Earth Hour, an international event supported by World Wide Fund for Nature/World Wildlife Fund will ones again be held this March 28, 2009. Earth Hour's aim is to reach more than 1 billion people in all cities around the world, inviting communities, business and governments to switch off lights within an hour to send a global message that we all need to fight against global warming. Earth Hour started on 2007, which caught attention of all people around the globe. On 2008, other countries joined and hopefully this 2009, Philippines will be one of the countries to support this worthwhile international event.

Earth Hour

VOTE EARTH

YOUR LIGHT SWITCH IS YOUR VOTE

This year, Earth Hour has been transformed into the world’s first global election, between Earth and global warming.

For the first time in history, people of all ages, nationalities, race and background have the opportunity to use their light switch as their vote – Switching off your lights is a vote for Earth, or leaving them on is a vote for global warming. WWF are urging the world to VOTE EARTH and reach the target of 1 billion votes, which will be presented to world leaders at the Global Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen 2009.

This meeting will determine official government policies to take action against global warming, which will replace the Kyoto Protocol. It is the chance for the people of the world to make their voice heard.

Earth Hour began in Sydney in 2007, when 2.2 million homes and businesses switched off their lights for one hour. In 2008 the message had grown into a global sustainability movement, with 50 million people switching off their lights. Global landmarks such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, Rome’s Colosseum, the Sydney Opera House and the Coca Cola billboard in Times Square all stood in darkness.

In 2009, Earth Hour is being taken to the next level, with the goal of 1 billion people switching off their lights as part of a global vote. Unlike any election in history, it is not about what country you’re from, but instead, what planet you’re from. VOTE EARTH is a global call to action for every individual, every business, and every community. A call to stand up and take control over the future of our planet. Over 74 countries and territories have pledged their support to VOTE EARTH during Earth Hour 2009, and this number is growing everyday.

We all have a vote, and every single vote counts. Together we can take control of the future of our planet, for future generations.

VOTE EARTH by simply switching off your lights for one hour, and join the world for Earth Hour.

Saturday, March 28, 8:30-9:30pm.

Philippine Cities Embrace Earth Hour

Manila and many other Philippine cities are gearing up for Earth Hour 2009. Last year in the Philippines, millions of people switched off their lights to signal their support of this global warming action. Manila, being the largest city, will be a big focus this year and Earth Hour continues to spread its positive message about the importance of energy saving. The Department of Energy in the Philippines is a supporter of the Earth Hour campaign.

Local businesses in Manila are contributing to Earth Hour and will be switching off their lights on the night. Thousands of people, around the Philippines, will be coming together to light a candle in support of this global warming awareness initiative.

An estimated 50 to 100 million people around the world switched off their lights for Earth Hour in 2008, and global landmarks including the Golden Gate Bridge, Rome’s Colosseum, the Coke billboard in Times Square and Jumeirah Hotel in Dubai darkened for one hour.

In 2009, Earth Hour aims to reach 1 billion people around the world in more than 1000 cities involving business, government and the community in the world’s largest global action on climate change on 28 March 2009.

In 2009, millions of people from all walks of life will join together for Earth Hour and show the world that it’s possible to take action on global warming.

Come on Philippines, join us for Earth Hour 2009, turn off your lights at 8.30pm Saturday 28 March and sign-up here at earthhour.org.

Can Social Networking Sites Raise Risk Of Health Problems?

When I read an article from PsyBlog, a particular link caught my attention, I was furious, and that link (Read Here) caught me off guard since I am an avid fan and user of Facebook and other Social Networks such as Friendster, Twitter, MySpace and more. Continuous use of these social networks is said to increase risk of health problems, but the question is how?

How?

  • Social networking sites such as Facebook could raise your risk of serious health problems by reducing levels of face-to-face contact, a doctor claims.

  • Emailing people rather than meeting up with them may have wide-ranging biological effects, said psychologist Dr Aric Sigman.

  • Increased isolation could alter the way genes work and upset immune responses, hormone levels and the function of arteries. It could also impair mental performance.

  • This could increase the risk of problems as serious as cancer, strokes, heart disease and dementia, Dr Sigman says in Biologist, the journal of the Institute of Biology.

  • Social networking sites such as MySpace and Facebook allow people to keep in touch with friends over the web.

  • But even though they are designed to bring people together, Dr Sigman said they were actually playing a significant role in people becoming more isolated.

  • Interacting 'in person' had effects on the body not seen when writing emails, Dr Sigman claimed. Levels of hormones such as the 'cuddle chemical' oxytocin, which promotes bonding, altered according to whether people were in close contact or not.

  • Some genes, including ones involved with the immune system and responses to stress, acted differently according to how much social interaction a person had with others.

Loneliness?

In Sigman's paper (PDF) he defined loneliness as:
being cited as causing low-grade peripheral inflammation which, in turn, is linked to inflammatory diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease,
and autoimmune disorders (e.g. rheumatoid arthritis, lupus).

Lack of social connection or loneliness is also associated with increased risk of
cardiovascular disease. The neuropeptide oxytocin is increasingly considered the
‘hormone of affiliation’, released in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid in response to everyday aspects of human interaction such as somatosensory stimulation, hugging, touch, warm temperature – and it is also involved in feelings of trust and generosity.

So my piece of advice guys is to connect with people on face-to-face bases than just be well connected over the internet, as we all know internet use have psychological downsides, than just day-to-day benefits.

The Fourth Principle

I've been wondering why I'm sad

For no reason, I'm not glad

The days I've spent so dark, so hollow

It's not that I can't dare to swallow

Mesmerizing are the stars above me

Captivating are the diamonds I cannot see

I've been wondering for so long

Hoping to know what's right or wrong

I hope to see one day the l;ight

For which will help me in my fight

Cause I know I can never win the battle

Without it, there's no dazzle

Honestly, life is kinda tough

The road's kinda rough

Sometimes I expect too much

I base my decisions on a hunch

Life's really not that easy

Sometimes people are good, oftentimes unruly

But hey, look at the bright side

There are many things I need not hide

This time there's no stopping

As the fourth principle is stating

Pursuing one's happiness is everybody's right

So lets all stand up and start our fight

Masaya, Masarap Maging Pinoy

[caption id="attachment_605" align="aligncenter" width="427" caption="Masaya, Masarap Maging Pinoy"]Masaya, Masarap Maging Pinoy[/caption]

What is it about being pinoy?

On March 13, 2009, Psychology students who are enrolled in Filipino Psychology of the University of San Carlos had a very different final exams than the usual written or oral examination. I was among those students who prepared a rather unusual way of convincing others students how "masaya and masarap" (happy and good)  it is to be a Filipino. Honestly it was awful to be roaming around the campus giving leaflets containing different places in the Philippines we Filipinos must be proud about to all students when it only destroys the environment (by wasting paper).  However, I found the importance of it, and how great it feels to be promoting Philippine Tourism to all students.

[caption id="attachment_608" align="aligncenter" width="411" caption="masaya, masarap maging Pinoy sticker"]masaya, masarap maging Pinoy sticker[/caption]

Well, going back to the question, what is it about being pinoy? I'm just reminded of an article I've read in the past elsewhere on the internet about ways how to know you are a Filipino. And let me quote from my previous blogsite as to the list of ways on how to know that you are a Filipino.

1. You point with your lips.
2. You nod upwards to greet someone.
3. You collect items from hotels or restaurants "for souvenir".
4. You smile for no reason.
5. You flirt by having a foolish grin in your face while raising your eyebrows repeatedly.
6. You go to a department store and try to bargain the prices.
7. You add an unwarranted "H" to your name, i.e. "Jhun," "Bhoy," "Rhon."
8. You put your hands together in front of you as if to make a path and say "excuse, excuse" when you pass in between people or in front of the TV
9. You like everything imported or "state-side."
10. You Check the labels on clothes to see where it was made before buying.
11. You always offer food to all your visitors.
12. You say "comfort room" instead of "bathroom."
13. You say "for take out" instead of "to go."
14. You asked for "Colgate" instead of "toothpaste."
15. You asked for a "pentel-pen" or a "ball-pen" instead of just "pen."
16. You order a McDonald's instead of "hamburger"(pronounced ham-boor-jer)
17. You say "Ha?" instead of "What."
18. You say "Hoy" to get someone's attention.
19. You answer when someone yells "Hoy."
20. You turn around when someone says "Psst!"
21. Your sneeze sounds like "ahh-ching" instead of "ahh-choo."
22. You prefer to make acronyms for phrases such as "OA" for over acting, or "TNT" for, well, you know.
23. You say "air con" instead of "a/c" or air conditioner.
24. You say "brown-out" instead of "black-out."
25. You have a portrait of "The Last Supper" hanging in your dining room.
26. You own a Karaoke System.
27. You own a piano that no one ever plays.
28. You own a "barrel man" (you pull up the barrel and you see something that looks familiar. schwing...)
29. You refer to your VCR as a "beytamax
30. You have a giant wooden fork and spoon hanging somewhere in the dining room
31. Your car has too many "burloloys" like a Jipneys back in P.I.
32. You hang a Rosary on your car's rear view mirror.
33. You order a "soft drink" instead of a "soda."
34. You refer to seasonings and all other forms of monosodium glutimate as "Ajinomoto"
35. This you 'll agree 100% ... Goldilocks" means more to you than just a character in a fairytale.

Almost all of them are true to me and my family, and I find it really funny reading the list. God I could say "Filipinos and their culture."

It's so masarap (pleasing) to be a Filipino in several ways I can point out.

First, we have people we are proud about. Philippines became know to other foreign countries because of these people. Its really nice to be giving them acknowledgment for what they have done.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="418" caption="Famous Filipinos"]Famous Filipinos[/caption]

Next, we have lot of Natural resources, and places including our beaches  that we are  lofty and gallant about, places like Palawan, Boracay, Panay, Bohol and others.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="424" caption="Ifugao - Land Of The Eighth World Wonder"]Ifugao - Land Of The Eighth World Wonder[/caption]

Third, we have a great heritage and festivities, and wildlife none of the other countries have.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="433" caption="Cebu - Queen Of The South"]Cebu - Queen Of The South[/caption]

We value family more than anything in the world.

Other than that we value our "Karangalan" (dignity, refers to what other people see in a person and how they use that information to make a stand or judge about his/her worth.); "Katarungan" (justice, refers to equity in giving rewards to a person.); Kalyaan (Freedom and mobility).

When we are asked who a Filipino is, we usually discuss that the Filipino culture has its roots on the  Malay spirit of the continental Asia. Filipinos have brownish skin, and slanting eyes. Learning our roots is important, as important as learning our own psychology. It's not enough that we know how a Filipino is described but also how a Filipino lives in the context of the family, in society, our values, beliefs and our culture.

I know what I presented isn't enough to convince you the essence of being a Filipino, but  let me ask you instead, why is it masaya and masarap to be a Filipino?

Google Voice: Voice Transcription

Now Google is just as amazing as they have always been. Google Voice is now capable of Voice Transcription. However, Google Voice is available for GrandCentral users only. See  demo video below.

GrandCentral, a phone management service that first launched in 2006 and was acquired by Google for $50+ million in 2007, hasn’t been in the news much lately. Other than a few good natured jabs at their marketing gimmicks and coverage of outages, that is. Get ready for that to change as the service prepares for a public launch under a new product name: Google Voice. (Read Original Post)

The new application improves the way you use your phone. You can get transcripts of your voicemail (see the video below) and archive and search all of the SMS text messages you send and receive. You can also use the service to make low-priced international calls and easily access Goog-411 directory assistance. (Read Original Post)

The Reason Your Church Must Twitter

Yesterday I blogged about Twitter Wit, which is book compilation of the wittiest wits in Twitter, edited by a freelance author from San Francisco. Read Entry Here.

And now, I have discovered yet another Twitter e-book entitled The Reason Your Church Must Twitter, which was released in January 2009, authored by church technology evangelist Anthony Coppedge.

Twitter For Churches

If you’re a pastor, student minister, or involved with some type of ministry, your first reaction to such a resource title is probably something along the lines of “Awesome, I need to read this”.  Others who don’t follow the “faith” probably see such a book as one more tool to promote evangelism through a social network.  I understand both possible reactions, but what’s unique about this book is though it was written “for” churches, it’s not your typical “church” resource.  This book would easily serve as a  tool for any individual or business who would like to know more about Twitter and learn how to get started.

I honestly haven't read the e-book but let me quote  from previous review. Read More.

Leadership is important to Anthony.  I don’t know that personally, but it’s clear within the book how much he values good and effective leadership, as well as the role of the church pastor.  The book devotes an entire chapter to pastors and leaders and explains how effective Twitter could make them with not only their congregation, but with their staff and volunteers.

I've Got New Email!

Twitter Email

Tired of shallow Twitter emails saying "BlahBlah is now following you on Twitter."? If so, Twitmailer is the answer to the problem. Twitmailer is a Twitter email notification that has a  "Follow Back" option within the email message. It dispays the follower's profile picture, recent tweets and website right from the email.

Twimailer

Twimailer is a middle man that intercepts the emails you receive from twitter and spruces it up before sending it to you!

The traditional email from twitter would only tell you whether you follow the person or not. But twimailer has a host of features. You can immediately follow back the people who have become your fans. You get to see the number of followers and friends your new follower has as well as their complete bio. Updates from the follower are also displayed.

For twimailer to be able to send you mail, you need to first enter the email that you have specified for your twitter account. After verification, twimailer would send you a new email that you need to set as your email id at twitter.

Take a look at this:

Analyze Your Tweets With Twitual And Friend Or Follow

Twitual is a Twitter app that helps you analyze tweeps who follow you,  tweeps followed by you, tweeps who are both friends and followers of you, tweeps who follow, but you don't follow back, and tweeps who you follow, but who don't follow back. Just enter your Twitter username (password not required), and let Twitual analyze.

Twitual

Here is my analysis: @jeelchristine

Twitual

However, there's a downside to this since Twitual does not let you unfollow Twitter users who doesn't follow your tweets but Twitter Karma does.

Friend Or Follow is similar to Twitual that it lets you view who are your followers in Fans category, tweeps who you are not following you back in Following category and, tweeps who are following you back in Friends category. And you can see all these tweeps' profile pictures. It does not require a password for your username. Just like TwitualFriend Or Follow does not let you unfollow tweeps who are not following you or follow those who you are not following but are following you.

Friend or Follow

And here is my result for Friends, or tweeps who I am following back.

Can't Exceed 140 Characters For Your Tweets?

Can't exceed 140 characters for your Twitter updates? when sometimes there's more to say than 140 characters.

Problem solved!

Twerbose lets you post, comment tweets with longer characters, and insert images and videos in your tweets, now that is really cool.

Twerbose

XLTweet comes from the creator of TwitWall, also extends your twitter character capability to beyond 140 characters. XLTweet will tweet the first 120 characterss, create a bit.ly short url similar to Twitter's tiny url, then save the rest on your own XLTweet page. Also, XLTweet automatically adds your XLTweet generated tweets to your favorites just in case you forgot XLTweet link.

XLTweet

BiggerTwitter is an addon rather a Twitter clone that lets you post massive tweets and is posted directly to your Twitter profile.

BiggerTwitter

TwitLonger is created by a freelance developer Stuart Gibson. TwitLonger longers your tweets beyond 140. TwitLonger automatically tweets your updates to your Twitter profile. However, there is a google adsense at the bottom of the tweets generated by TwitLonger.

TwitLonger

Though these Twitter extensions deviates to the idea of micro-blogging, they are still great extensions for twittering beyond 140 characters, especially when sharing links that do not fit the limited number of characters.

Turning Twitter Into A Feed (Tweet) Reader

If Google Reader is capable of marking Read and Unread to your subscribed feeds, a new Twitter client called TwitteReader is also capable of marking Read and Unread to your friend's Twitter updates. You may also star items that are added to your favorite tweets.

TwitteReader is simple unlike Google Reader, which has advanced features such a sidebar containing your favorite blogsites, and on the main window are the entries from these websites. Google Reader is capable of item sharing such as this one (my  shared items). However, TwitteReader also  has great features, like:

  1. Offline marking and unmarking read messages

  2. Page system

  3. Shortcut keys r-refresh, k-up and j-down

  4. No signup required

  5. Update Twitter (send messages) and reply to users

  6. Delete updates

  7. Favorite and unfavorite messages

  8. Message parser

  9. Messages auto-reload each 5 minutes

Take a look at my TwitteReader:

  1. marking system was remade. It is now based on offline marking (and unmarking) and on refresh or on leave of the "read" page, it will store the marks online. Much faster user interface and only one AJAX communication with the server

  2. when users delete messages, the system now detects them and delete their record on the database as well

  3. page system added. Each page has its own unread counter

  4. code reviewed and commented. Stable beta version 0.23 zipped and shared

  5. 'r' key, shortcut for refresh button added

  6. signup isn't required anymore. Twitter users login with their username and password and start reading right away

  7. update Twitter over TwitteReader is now available. Just like in Twitter, you have your 140 characters to write and the update button

  8. unique link to message added to the options bar

  10. reply icon added. Soon available

  11. number of characters left reset after submited update

Facebook Is Updating To A Platform Similar To Twitter's

Twitter as we all know has become a fast growing micro-blogging social network that even Facebook is making their own platform similar to Twitter's after a failed bid.

Twitter Inc. is at a critical juncture now that the popular Facebook Inc. has redesigned its services to, well, be a lot more like Twitter, according to analysts.

Facebook announced late yesterday that its public profiles have been updated to allow users to share their information with an unlimited number of friends. The updates, according to Facebook, can "be brief messages" similar to Tweets or longer ones that include photos and videos. The new Facebook setup will also enable businesses, organizations or even celebrities to blast out information to customers, members or fans. Read More

But I don't really find the reason why Facebook has to compete with Twitter because both are different and are similar in ways. Well, its not a question of competition, its to attract users and make online social networking better. Both are status updaters, wherein members get to update their status as often as they can. Members may also use Twitter application in order for them to update their Twitter status just within his or her Facebook Box. See how my Twitter app looks like in my Facebook Box

Twitter App

And this is how the new Facebook Homepage looks like.

New Facebook Homepage

See original view here.

Updates will be able to be filtered by groups, specific friends, family, or by applications. A new publishing box for sharing updates will incorporate the ability to add not just status notes, but also links, photos, and videos. A new widget will highlight items from friends and other connections members interact with the most. Read More.

Generally, I have nothing against Facebook designing a new homepage, however I enjoy Facebook because of its originality in fetaures and this new Twitter-like homapage project omits this value of originality. Regardless of my biases, this new homepage will allow users to filter their feeds, and thus making life easier for that matter! A thumbs up for Facebook.
